The uses of Mandarin - Editorial - New Straits Times

The uses of Mandarin - Editorial - New Straits Times

LANGUAGE is a complex instrument of human communication, learned as opposed to genetically inherited. This fact makes it always a work in progress for as long as it is kept alive by its users. Every language is a received code recognised by the user and is largely influenced by the culture it represents. The more advanced the culture, the more intricate the language because the ideas to be transmitted are more numerous and sophisticated. And Mandarin, because of China's unbroken history that is more than five millennia old, would suggest an incredible medium by which to tap into a rich civilisation. That this country is fortunate to have such strong links to the language, especially when China is again on the rise as a global power, must count as a competitive advantage that should not be left by the wayside.

Of course, the Mandarin of old, with its enormous treasury of characters, spoke of an exclusive elite. However, it is today a simplified modern lingua franca of more than a billion mainland Chinese. As the world's second largest economy and growing, China is important as both market and producer. Trading with it then is a means to mutual prosperity. For a small country like Malaysia aspiring to be a high-income nation by 2020, China's large market is necessary to get into. Doing business there requires a command of Mandarin much more than English. Not surprisingly, Chinese Malaysian businesses have acted as vanguard in the two countries' burgeoning economic ties.

The Education Ministry's pledge to provide resources for the teaching and learning of Mandarin in national schools is beneficial at more than the levels of culture and economics. Language familiarity can enhance connections within the country's racial diversity. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's openness is a recognition of pragmatic trends in the society. An increasing number of Malay children is becoming Mandarin conversant and the ministry's move is to a certain extent merely to meet demand. But a widening embrace of the language also opens the way to more exchange and understanding, and propels the building of a true 1Malaysia. Promoting Mandarin as a third language does not mean that certain interest groups are being pandered to. Rather, it is proffered as encouraging national unity within a uniquely Malaysian milieu of mutual regard and respect.

English a ticket out of poverty - Columnist - New Straits Times

English a ticket out of poverty - Columnist - New Straits Times

I BELIEVE the argument on the need for better English proficiency was won long ago. The overwhelming majority of Malaysians, regardless of race, recognise the need for better, if not good, English.

At times, too much of our time is spent trying to put forth the argument on the importance of the language, when in fact it is no longer necessary.

Of course, there are those who continue to suggest the Japanese or Germans did well without English.

There is logic in the argument, of course, but it is flawed, opportunistic and self-promoting.

By the same perverse logic, we can also argue that the architects, engineers and builders of the great pyramids of Egypt, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall of China were obviously not disadvantaged by not knowing English.

They were still able to build magnificent monuments of human civilisation.

Why should we deprive ourselves of what is generally accepted as the world's most important language for business, diplomacy, science and technology?

The world is moving so fast that we hardly have time to understand things, much less translate them, before the next one comes along.

In the real world, at least in Malaysia, it is also recognised, fairly or not, that those with good English are generally likely to fare better than those without.

There are academically-superior graduates whose upward mobility has somehow been affected by their proficiency in the language, when compared with the academically-average but with superior command of English.

It should not be the case, of course, but surveys done on employers suggest that it is the case.

I was in India recently where even in the poorest of neighbourhoods in New Delhi there were signs, painted on buildings, signboards and banners, promoting private educational facilities from pre-school to technical institutions, offering English-medium education.

There, English is seen as a socio-economic mobility tool.

For the poor, it is a ticket out of the economic morass, especially when English is the language of business and government.

But before someone comes up with examples of people who did very well in spite of their command of English, it must be noted that it is not the rule.

Just as the Japanese, Germans, etc, do not need English to prosper, there may be captains of industry who cannot speak the language.

Since we all agree on the importance of English, the only issue is how we attain it.

There are many stakeholders along the way, at times too many, trying to influence the objective this way and that.

Generally, all mean well, but most are limiting their focus just to better serve their interests.

However, here is the hard truth. While we can do many things, we have to admit and accept the fact that there is no way we can have the level of English in our schools like how it was three or four decades ago.

Even then, when the level of English proficiency was better, not everyone mastered it.

But the propensity of those who were proficient in the language to be employed in commerce and government, as well as to be in high places, made us believe that we were generally better at English.

In fact, there were more people who did not speak English well.

Those who spoke or wrote English well were generally from English-medium schools, hence the clamour by some for the return of this type of institutions.

People also see English-medium schools as not only a solution for better English, but also a cure-all for other ills, ranging from national unity to the quality of the Malaysian football team.

The never-ending debate over the use of English for the teaching of Mathematics and Science is a manifestation of the desire to have more English in school.

Many parents believe it is a good thing and the decision to revert to Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Tamil, unwise.

Of course, it is true that English is the dominant medium for science and technology.

Also, currently, too much energy is wasted to complain about the inability of schools or teachers to impart English language skills to our students.

That may be the case, but we must acknowledge that without the use of English as the medium of instruction in schools, the ability of most students to master the language is limited if their interaction with it is only in the classrooms.

In our system, either in national or vernacular schools, English is more of a subject than a language. Students "study" the language and sit for examinations, but do not "live" it.

No matter how much time or periods are added for the subject in school, or native speakers added to the teaching force, or even if Maths and Science are to be taught again in English, we must accept the fact that our kids' English proficiency will not be automatic.

These are all enablers and tools to get our children familiar and comfortable with the language.

I must say, if parents want their charges to have better proficiency in the language, stopping short of enrolling them in private English-medium schools, they must supplement their children's diet of English with books, movies or songs.

We must get our kids to practise English, rather than learn it.

Better English may start in school, but these days it must be promoted, nurtured and "lived" outside of the classrooms.

We can try to blame the authorities, but in the end, the finger is pointed at each of us.

As English student (graduated already), i believed what the author said has some truth. Even though i did learnt English, i rarely used it especially when im with my friends of same community. However, i need to stress that its time for us to open our eyes and ears and listen to what the world is saying.. English in one sense is a tool of communication, rather than language, despite the differences ones might have with another. Its not I'm suggesting we leave our mother tongue behind. Its just that we need to be more open regarding the issue. One needs to know that all of us want to keep our own language at the top of the game. While doing so, why dont we let our children to have access to the world of knowledge and letting them know what kind of world they're living in..

we treasure our national language more than anything else..but keep the door open for our children to have wider view and perspective by letting them know other languages as well..

Sayangi dan Hargai bahasa kebangsaan kita...

crdt to the author..
thanks for reading...

Syed Ali Nurur Alam mendapat beberapa anak.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch

A very great debut novel..It was awesome..I'm still  a beginner in this reading field. I just happened to buy few weeks back..All thanks to the book fair that was held in UPM..big sale lol..no wonder everybody's crazy about it.the books were seriously cheap..and for me, it was just a great opportunity since i've been trying to buy some English books..

Ok2..back to the topic, White Oleander was great..totally!!Though my English isn't that bombastic, but I had fun reading it..totally mind-blowing..there's need no doubt why it's one of Oprah books' club..A story of a pair of self-centered mother and teenage daughter and life. I felt sorry for Astrid for having to deal with her merciless mother in her young age. Ingrid loves her..that's for sure..but the way she loves herself more is so unacceptable. I might be wrong, but I think she thinks negatively about the world..that's why she's been making up rules for herself..And when she broke the rule for a man she loved whom betrayed her, she fell down to earth, hardly to get up..she was hurt, but Astrid was hurting more. She's young, and she has nobody to turn to..her mother doesn't realised that..

Astrid has to go through painful teenage times. She has been to many foster homes only to experience the bittersweet of life. She learned about love, relationship, sex, money and all. She's becoming  a bad girl in her sweet appeal. She's a good girl, but there's rebellious girl inside her. She has to fight with herself. But, she learned. She loves her mother, and hate her..The hatred for making her life miserable and painful. She understands the pain her mother felt, but she's young and she needed her..

It's a beautiful love story between the mother and daughter. It's painful but that what life is..we can never expect things to turn out sweet and lovely all the time. It's a must read book for book lovers out there..

p/s-it's my 4th book i've read!!!

how make up could do magic!!!

I do know now that how makeup could do some magic on a person... Never did I thought, that makeup is necessary, though I know I'll have to wear it once i started working. I never come to like wearing makeup since it's burdensome to me..hehheheheh..(i'm no such feminine)..
these are the pictures I took last Thursday during our makeup session for our coming solo performance..
I do look different, right???

Hahaha..can't even believe my eyes!!that's look so different.. sometimes, my friends could not even notice me when i'm wearing makeup,  or when i do not put my glasses on me.. I might disguise one better day and pretend to be somebody else..that would be fun~~~~
 how do i look???

a day of reflection~~

Days by days, and life seems to be nothing but pieces of puzzle.. Never thought that life could be so short for others while me and the rest are trying to enjoy every single moment life offers.. I just received a bad new yesterday saying one of my dearest schoolmate has passed away due to an accident. Though we were not close, but as a friend, my heart stopped beating for a while. Last year too, one of my classmate was no longer here. It makes me think that life is not a joke. We will never know what will happen ahead. But for those friends of mine, my dearest condolence....
Friends, let live a life now......

kemerengan sekeping jiwa

aaahhhh..tension tol rase skg..nak kta jadual terlampau pack, takde la gak..byk je free time..tapi tu la, rasa macam diri aku dah perlahan-lahan berubah..kalau berubah ke arah kebaikan takpe la juga, ini lebih ke arah negatif..

10 Petanda Dia Jodoh Kita

Semakin hari semakin sayang kepadanya. Kita sentiasa tenang, gembira dan dia menjadi pengubat kedukaan kita. Dia juga merasainya. Rasa senang sekali apabila bersama. Apabila berjauhan, terasa sedikit tekanan dan rasa ingin berjumpa dengannya. Tidak kira siang ataupun malam, ketiadaannya terasa sedikit kehilangan.
3. Terima Kita Seadanya
Jadi, dialah sebaik-baik pilihan.
5. Percaya Mempercayai
Setiap orang mempunyai rahsia tersendiri.
Jika dia pilihan kita, buatlah keputusan sebaiknya.

an attempt to be a Japanese???

I would never thought that I'm going to wear this..though it is not kimono, but yukata is good enough. At least, I have the chance to wear it. Thanks to Nima and her sister for letting me borrow this yukata. This is what i'll be wearing for my solo performance this coming April. it's valentine~~

valentine~~
it brings back lovely memories of an innocent girl (at the moment la)...and now, valentine's is nothing much than a romantic day  for some couples..a day of confessing, a day to be lovey-dovey and a day to start romancing..people have their own thoughts on valentine and mine is romantic.. wish i have romantic affair now, but let it be.. i dont wanna get bothered by such things, and let it happens naturally..love is such a nice and naive thing~~~

sgt beshhh~~

the days of tears~~

OMG~~finally i'm back. glad, happy and grateful; that's how i'm feeling right now. and few people deserve to be thanks to- my dad, mom, pulong and kak sue. i dont think yesterday would be any better than this. i've been feeling down, but now i'm getting better. it's just i've to work triple harder than my original plan. the CNY was a day to remember, maybe as a sign to how little i've worked so far. guess Allah will never let His people to waste any single moments. the days of tears were slowly gone, but what's waiting ahead is unpredictable. i just need to get back on my feet and i'm going to be okay. today is a new day and smiles, everything would be as clear as the sky is..Guys, love you triple much~~~~

The Living Art of Ikebana

omona~~~ is this what i'm going to do? gosh, i need to learn this perfectly~~
OMONA~~

close to heart

never thought a simple word such 'thank you' will bring such a great happiness. how simple is that?? isn't life is so amazing and puzzling. we will never expect what to come and unbelievably, we just live the way it is. when life is harsh, we seek for a pair of hands; when life is easy, we make it hard. still, families and friends are always there, the ones that truly love us. at least the ones that i know they'll never let go of me..
but, as long we have faith within each other, there are no boundaries we can't cross~~~

lets have some fun~~

I thought myself as a dull, boring yet sweet girl..hehehheeh..especially when i'm with people i just knew. i could be hyperactive, sarcastic and charming with my best girl and guy friends. some said that i'm quite friendly that they often mistaken as that or this someone's girl. unfortunately i'm own by no one..so sad..but, life is simple yet complicated. so lets just have fun and enjoy the moments without worries or arguments. let have some peace sometimes, and let argue when necessary. Friends, life is too short to cry on~~~~

aaaa????

Assalamualaikum..
aigooo~~`tu la la perkataan pertama yang aku sebut pagi. Tersangatlah malas aku nak bangun tadi. Yelah, semalam aku tido lambat kot. (perosak bahasa tol aku ney).
well anyways, having feeling so sleepy, i'm about to sleep. I'm so sleepy but i restrain a bit. I'm wacthing "KAMILAH BINTANG" which I found a very great show for young teenagers, with no elimination. That's a new way of reality show. Plus, I've watched most of the episodes, and my favourite is FAISAL!!! He's very talented. He captured my eyes the moment he started singing. That's awesome. Hope that he'll turn to be someone's great in the industry years later.Others are good too; Wani is very consistently amazing, Dayang is getting there, Farhan is someone's to watch out, Aiman is up to par, and Qistina needs more learning. overall, they will be good years ahead.
why am i talking about it????

reflecting~~~

What a day~~Chinese New Year is around the corner, and here I am, stuck somewhere in UPM..but that's the choice I've chosen.. I really wanted to go home, it's just that I wanna reflect myself more. I'm trying my own goals of doing what I'm doing. I don't want to regret at some point of my life further ahead. I wanna proudly said, I know what I'm doing. And that's the bigger problem that I'm facing. I kinda lost, and seems I can't figure out which road to take. Life isn't that complicated, right? It just our minds keep contradicting our hearts. I really wish I can figure out which road to walk once I'm done.

Whitney Houston I Didn't Know My Own Strength lyrics

Lost touch with my soul
I had no where to turn
I had no where to go
Lost sight of my dream,
Thought it would be the end of me
I thought I’d never make it through
I had no hope to hold on to,
I thought I would break

I didn’t know my own strength
And I crashed down, and I tumbled
But I did not crumble
I got through all the pain
I didn’t know my own strength
Survived my darkest hour
My faith kept me alive
I picked myself back up
Hold my head up high
I was not built to break
I didn’t know my own strength

Found hope in my heart,
I found the light to life
My way out of the dark
Found all that I need
Here inside of me
I thought I’d never find my way
I thought I’d never lift that weight

I thought I would break

I didn’t know my own strength
And I crashed down, and I tumbled
But I did not crumble
I got through all the pain
I didn’t know my own strength
Survived my darkest hour
My faith kept me alive
I picked myself back up
Hold my head up high
I was not built to break
I didn’t know my own strength

There were so many times I
Wondered how I’d get through the night I
Thought took all I could take

I didn’t know my own strength
And I crashed down, and I tumbled
But I did not crumble
I got through all the pain
I didn’t know my own strength
Survived my darkest hour
My faith kept me alive
I picked myself back up
Hold my head up high
I was not built to break
I didn’t know my own strength

refreshing~~

Hurm..what I wanna write today huh?? Can't really figure out something but I had an enjoyable day today at least. I had fun with my deary best friend, Murnie. It's good to have fun sometimes, that's why I have in mind. It seems like I can't do much things, feel like my mind is somewhere else. I can't bring myself to focus on things that I've should.  Sometimes, I think I've lost my interest and unmotivated to keep on progressing.
Let's find the spirit back~~~

my tiring yet awesome day~~~

Our Exciting Journey~~

I had a very enjoying and exciting day last Saturday. Our original plan was to have fun at Desa Water Park. At a very last moment, we've decided to make a journey to Melaka. It was around 1 hour and 15 mins (I guess) hehe from there, so let's give it a try we said. I slept in awhile due to my dizzyness and woke up to see that we were at Ayer Keroh toll.  And finally, we're there~~~

We parked our car and walked around. Melaka is really amusing and beautiful. We went to many places, and can't believe that the historical part of the city is being taken care real good. I've been there twice, yet the third time is still exciting just like the first time. I have to thanks Murnie for the invitation, Aien for being our driver and Sinah for sharing our good moments together. We've met for the first time, but it felt like we've known each other for a long time~~thanks guys~~

I believe that good moments are meant to be shared. No matter who spent the day, or how we did that, as long as the memory is there, even the first time will become priceless memory. I had fun that day, I'm glad that I joined them that day~~
GUYS, thank you for the memories~~~

how can i??

I'm so dead~~ I feel like losing a part of myself which I adore. Seems like lately, I've turned into somebody which I really hope I could change. I guess some changes are not meant to be fit for me. The feeling that I have now is a mix of despair and joy. I'm proud, but the feeling is slowly fading. I have nothing much to offer to myself. Sometimes, I feel so disappointed over my own self. Soon, I began to understand. It is me that will decide which one that I wanna be; the past me or the new me. Either one, that's the path I'll decided to walk on and any other changes that'll come, I've to handle them wisely. I've to prepared to face the battle on the real world~~

dunno~~

i guess my mind has come to point zero..Gosh, i need to figure out something for my solo performance, yet i have nothing in mind.. My first idea is about Minangkabau, but i'm afraid i can't bring the Indonesian presence in my performance. So, i figured something else which I'm very interested in.. "bachelor parasite" aka parasit bujang..sounds really interesting. However, the real issue is how am i going to show the Japanese culture in that chosen issue. Since it is more to modern, so i kinda inspired to put the traditional and modern culture together. Can i do that?????
Help me~~~~

FRIDAY

it's Friday already~~
it's a good day isn't it? but not really for me..this is the day when i have class from 5-8pm.. i really hoped for no more class until 8pm, but guess it'll never gonna happen. So, we can't go against the power right? upset, but we are gonna have fun all along the class. My minor classes are when I enjoy most. We have it all there; laughter, pressures, smiles, new experiences, friendship and arguments. It sounds great right??

since it's my final sem, i have to give my all so that i won't regret for not doing what i wanted to do. let's share and express ourself better and better..
GOOOOO~~~

new year, new beginning

it's new year..let's start hoping for the best..
i'm looking forward for what this year will offer.. i guess i have to play my part as well in making it fun and worthy..
GOAL~~do i have one?? not in particular.. but  i wanna graduate by the end of the sem and do all i could to finish my FYP which actually terrifying me..hhuhuhuhuhuuu...what should i do?? i could consider that as a booster right??
well, since it's new  year let's have fun throughout the year and think positively ahead..
hope 2011 will create lots of new memories that will last forever..
2011, let's have fun!!!!
